We Believe...

Learning is exciting!

Students are curious - we encourage and value that!
Students create their own understanding of the world - we make sure that they actively tackle concepts!
Students engage in critical thinking - we structure tasks so that even young children can analyze and appraise what they are learning.

This is not a place for drills and worksheets; this is a place for students to think curiously, creatively and critically!

Who We Are

Partners in Learning has been a family-owned Davis institution for over two decades. Our tutors are experts in their fields, and are primarily undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates of UC Davis. Together, we form a vibrant and resourceful learning community.

What We Do

We strive to give you, our students, every advantage with individual and small group attention. Our lessons are assessment-based and developed specifically for you, so you receive exactly what you need to succeed. We tutor all ages and abilities in a diverse array of subjects.

How Tutoring Works

To begin classes at Partners in Learning, start by calling our office. We will match you with a tutor based on your desired subject, level, and availability. Because we want to be sure that you and your tutor are a good fit, you may meet your tutor before committing to classes.

During the first session, you and your tutor will discuss your needs and goals and complete an interactive assessment. In order to design lessons tailored specifically to your needs, tutors must determine the areas in which you are strongest, which areas need strengthening, and the ways in which you learn best.

When school is in session, our office is open Monday-Thursday from 1-7pm. Once we match you with a tutor, you may meet your tutor in our center at any time that fits both your schedules, in or outside of our office hours. We know that you have busy and unpredictable schedules and do our best to be flexible. Should your tutor ever be absent, we will be happy to provide a substitute for you.

Elementary Classes

Language Arts

Reading: Through our unique phonics program we’ll help your child learn to recognize letter sounds and decode words. By understanding how sounds combine to create words, students can improve their ability to read fluently and accurately.

Reading Comprehension: Learning to understand and attach meanings to the words in a text is an important part of reading. We will help students identify main concepts and relate what they read to real-life experiences so that they can understand, remember, and share what they read with others. We believe that with encouragement, all children can acquire the skills and confidence needed to develop a love of reading.

Writing: Creating a strong writing foundation when students are young fosters a love of writing. We challenge our students to be creative and think critically in order to develop their writing skills.

Some common topics we cover include:

  • Writing legibly
  • Using standard grammar and punctuation
  • Identifying and understanding different parts of speech
  • Improving spelling and vocabulary
  • Constructing complete sentences with varied sentence structures
  • Using paragraphs to separate thoughts and ideas
  • Writing multiple drafts in order to identify and correctly edit mistakes
  • Experimenting with different types of writing such as different kinds of essays, stories, and poetry

Math

Some common topics we cover include:

  • Number sense, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Time and money, fractions, decimal, and percents
  • Word problems and Common Core curriculum

Science

Our science programs introduce young students to the scientific method. Since we are located directly off the Arboretum our tutors have access to a wide ecosystem of flora, fauna, and potential experiments! We have several resources including microscopes to examine the microscopic world!

"My daughter’s reading progressed by leaps and bounds with tutoring by Partners in Learning. Moreover, her increased confidence carried into other subjects at school. She wants to go to tutoring. And she loves her tutor. Partners in Learning takes an individualized and personal approach to their students. I’m so glad we found them. Partners in Learning is one of the best things we have done for our daughter."

Please call to reserve your spot in a class. We must have two or more students enrolled in order to run a class. If you have two or more students, we can work with you to create a group class at days and times that work for all involved. For more individualized attention and flexible scheduling, we also offer one-on-one tutoring in both subjects for all three tests.

Please call if you have any questions, to set up a class, or to reserve your spot.
